Recycling 101

Keeping the Earth clean is super easy and can be implemented in your day-to-day life! Around 100,000 lbs of waste comes from your lifetime alone! Here are a few simple ways to efficiently recycle and reduce your carbon footprint.

1. REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE

One of the most common sayings we heard in elementary school. Reduce the amount of items you throw in your recycling bins and garbage cans and try and find ways to reuse your items in different projects. Pinterest has an endless amount of up cycling crafts and projects!

2. RECYCLE WATER

Water is so important to preserve! Take the water you used from cooking your afternoon noodles and drain it into a separate bowl. After it cools down, you can use it to water your plants!

3. USE LESS PLASTIC BAGS

Plastic bags such as grocery bags turn into harmful tiny pieces after they dissolve. Instead, try looking for a reusable grocery bag. Many local grocery stores have them for sale, or you can find some fashionable patterned canvas bags on Amazon! Some canvas bags are made from recycled products, making this a double whammy!

4. SIZE MATTERS

Yes, size does matter. Especially when it comes to recycling! Do not recycle anything smaller than a credit card. The little items can jam the recycling machines or shut them down altogether. This goes for, K-cups, bottle caps, straws, plastic silverware, and many other items. Be aware of what you're recycling!

5. KEEP IT CLEAN

Before you toss anything in your bin, make sure there is no residue of any kind. This prevents odor and animals/insects from taking a peek, and prevents contaminating other items in your bin.

6. COMPACT

Compact what you want to recycle so you can make more room! The more you compact, the more space you will have to recycle more items.

7. SAVE MONEY AND FOOD

When going to school or work or wherever you may be, pack your lunch in a reusable container. This reduces packaging waste and saves money on going out to eat!

8. WALK MORE

Walking where you can instead of driving or using public transportation reduces greenhouse gas emissions and keeps the air fresh. Biking is also good transportation to keep the Earth clean!

9. USE LESS PAPER

Paper is something many people use almost everyday. Only print when necessary, use more emails, and try to use both sides of the paper!

10. DO NOT RECYCLE BLACK COLORED PLASTIC

The color black does not reflect light. This stops black plastic from being detected by recycling scanners and can contaminate other plastics because it is not sorted properly. Black plastic can be tossed in your garbage bin!

11. BE CAREFUL WITH PIZZA BOXES

Pizza boxes are made of recyclable material, but easily gets soiled from grease and sauce and cheese. Once it's dirty it is no longer recyclable and can contaminate other items that get recycled.

12. RECYCLING DURING THE HOLIDAYS

A lot of materials are wasted during the holidays. Reuse your ribbons and bows every year you can and use the boxes from packages you receive as gift boxes!

13. ENCOURAGE ART AND ARTISTS

If you know any artists making art from recycled materials, support them! Also, if you know any teachers, encourage them to shed light on art made from recycled materials.

14. DO YOUR RESEARCH

If you are ever unsure what you can and can't recycle, look it up! You can even call or visit your local refuse providers and recycle centers for information.
