PRESERVING PUMPKINS
Happy Halloween + Thanksgiving!! With this spooky holiday on the rise, we want to make sure your decorations are scarily awesome! Pumpkins are a super popular Halloween + Thanksgiving decoration, so listed below are five ways to help preserve them.
1. BLEACH SOAKThis is a commonly known trick but it is super effective! Before carving, put on a pair of gloves and prepare your soak. Add one to two teaspoons of bleach to a gallon of water and let the pumpkin soak for up to 24 hours. The bleach will kill any bacteria and extend its lifespan.
2. MOISTURIZE
Just like us, pumpkins need to take care of their skin too! Using petroleum jelly or vegetable oil to rub all over your pumpkin will keep it from shriveling up and drying out. Just be careful because it is flammable!
3. DO NOT USE A CANDLE
Speaking of flammable, don’t use a candle inside your pumpkin! Essentially, you are cooking your pumpkin when lighting a candle inside of it. Instead use a glow stick or flameless candle!
4. ICE BATH
If your pumpkin needs some rehydration or starts to wilt, bring it inside and let it soak in ice water. Make sure to wipe it dry when taking it out!
5. TAKE IT INSIDE AT NIGHT
When it is time for bed make sure to bring the pumpkins in for bed too! Putting them in the fridge overnight will keep your pumpkin hydrated and also gives your pumpkin some time away from the possibility of animals or bugs taking a bite!
Preserving your pumpkins can be super easy! Try out these tips and have a happy, safe, and spoooooky Halloween!!!
